The closure of Simpasture PO is one of 2,500 proposed by the government
Sedgefield MP Phil Wilson has objected to the closure of Simpasture Post Office, despite that fact that this is as a result of government policy. Several government ministers have been accused of hypocrisy for the same thing.
The Liberal Democrats have been campaigning against Post Office closures for years. But this should not be a party political issue – we should all be fighting together in a concerted effort to save this vital local facility from closure.
New Council could save our local Post Offices
Following the vote in the House of Commons on 20th March in favour of the closure of 2,500 local POs, we are looking to the future. Essex County Council has announced its intention to take over 15 of the 31 local Post Offices in its area either recently closed or due to close. In
Aycliffe LibDems therefore propose that the new Durham Unitary County Council, to be elected on 1st May this year and to take office on 1st April 2009, should consider taking over some or all of the 14 POs under threat. For this to be effective, the government must agree to keep them open in the meantime.
