IMPOSED BY LABOUR
Next year (2009) all seven local councils in County Durham will be abolished and replaced by a single “unitary” authority based at County Hall in Durham. This undemocratic decision has been bulldozed through by Labour, against the wishes of the great majority of people across the county. In a county-wide referendum last year, 76% of people voted against Labour’s plans to knock eight councils into one, reducing the number of local councillors by TWO THIRDS.
This new Unitary Council will be elected on 1st May THIS YEAR. When you cast your vote, remember it was Labour who imposed this unwanted reduction in our local democratic representation which we LibDems strongly opposed.
