FIGHT FOR SERVICES

Labour's decision to impose "county unitary" councils on Durham and Norhumberland - against the wishes of the great majority of the electorate - will see many services administered from County Hall instead of relatively local centres like Green Lane. But the Tory “reforms” of 1974 also saw many local councils abolished and replaced by much larger councils. Services moved to Sedgefield Council and its HQ at Green Lane. Now Sedgefield and the six other district councils in County Durham are to be abolished next year.
If Labour wins a majority on the new County Unitary Council on May 1st this year, the danger is that local services will be further centralised and concentrated at County Hall in Durham.

Aycliffe LibDems say that Labour must not be allowed to centralise local services in County Hall.
