Our immediate task is to ensure that Aycliffe gets a fair deal with the new Durham County Unitary Council to be elected on 1st May this year. Sedgefield Council will be abolished, along with Durham County Council and the other six district councils in the county.

Aycliffe Liberal Democrats have six candidates for the six Councillors to be elected to the new Durham County Unitary Council on 1st May. There are to be two councillors for each of the three Aycliffe Wards: North, East and West. The LibDem candidates are: Andrea Bergg, Chris Foote-Wood (Aycliffe North), Derek Jago, Paul Thomas (Aycliffe East) and Michael Anderson,Janine Mawson (Aycliffe West).

The decision to replace all eight existing councils with one, huge new council to cover the whole of County Durham, has been imposed by the Labour govewrnment against LibDem opposition and the wishes of the great majority of local people.
On 1st May we are putting up candidates in all three Aycliffe wards. If elected, we will fight for local services to be administered locally and not centralised at County Hall in Durham as Labour will undoubtedly do if they get a majority on this new council. After our success in the recent Sedgefield Parliamentary By-Election, when LibDems came second to Labour and pushed the Tories into third place, we are very hopeful of winning seats in Aycliffe and elsewhere.
